1. Textiles Ministry Extends Mandatory Use of Jute Bags for Packaging Until December 31, 2024

The Ministry of Textiles has extended the compulsory use of jute bags for packaging 100% of foodgrains and 20% of sugar production until December 31, 2024. This decision faces legal challenges, with concerns raised by the jute industry over the impact on wages, pricing, and livelihoods. The Calcutta High Court has issued an interim stay on the reverse auction procurement of jute bags through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal. Further hearings on this matter are scheduled for November 29, 2024.

2. US Port Strike to Severely Impact Indian Textile, Pharma, and Auto Part Exports

The strike at 14 major US ports, which began last Tuesday, is already causing significant delays in unloading and processing shipments from India. The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) has reported that this disruption is adversely affecting Indian exports of textiles, pharmaceuticals, and auto parts, with costs expected to rise threefold due to the delays.

Bharat Tex, India’s premier global textile event, successfully wrapped up its roadshow in Coimbatore, building anticipation for its upcoming edition from February 14 to 17, 2025, in Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The event will feature India's strengths across the textile value chain, from raw materials to finished products. Bharat Tex is organized by 12 Indian Textile Export Promotion Councils and is supported by the Ministry of Textiles, aiming to solidify India's position as a global leader in textile manufacturing.

4. Sircilla Textile Park in Telangana Shuts Down Amid Financial Crisis

The Sircilla Textile Park in Telangana has ceased its operations, with 70 units shutting down due to financial difficulties, high electricity costs, and lack of government support. Around 1,000 workers have lost their jobs as a result. The park's management and workers have appealed to the government to intervene and support the resumption of manufacturing activities, highlighting the challenges faced in comparison to the support provided to the textile industry in other states like Maharashtra.
