Fancy Yarns
Fancy yarns can be defined as yarns in which interruption
or decorative discontinuity are purposely added, it can be either color or form
OR of both color and form.
The basic structure of a fancy doubled yarn is
that it consists of a ‘core’ threads, an
‘effective material’ and in the more
complex cases and a ‘binder’ which ensures that the entire structure holds
together. Other forms of fancy effect may be based on color effects or on
variation in the details of the spinning process. Some of the fancy yarn
structures are mentioned below.
Slub Yarn:
- A slub yarn is the yarn in which slubs have been purposely added to produce the desired effect. Slubs are basically thick places.
- They can take the form of a very gradual change, with only a slight thickening of the yarn at its thickest point.
- Alternatively, the slub may be three or four times the thickness of the base yarn.
Marl Yarn:
- It is one of the simplest fancy effect, a marl yarn is one in which two yarns of the same count and twist, but of different colors are folded together to form a balanced yarn.
- These yarns are used to good effect in discreet pinstripes for men’s suitings or to produce an irregular patterned knitted fabric using a relatively simple fabric construction.
Knop Yarn:
- A knop yarn is the one in which that consists of bunches of one or more of its component threads which are arranged at regular or irregular intervals along its length.
- The insertion of twists gathers the knop thread into a bunch which referred as knop.
- A knop yarn is made of coiled yarn rather than being a fibrous mass like a slub in slub yarn.
Gimp Yarn:
- A gimp yarn is a compound yarn which consists of twisted core with an effect yarn wrapped around it so as to produce wavy projections on the surface.
- The binder is needed to ensure the stability of the yarn structure hence the yarn is produced in two stage, firstly two yarns of widely different count are piled together, thick around thin. Secondly, the above mentioned yarn is reversed bound with the binder yarn.
- The reverse binding removes most of the twist inserted during the first process. The removal of this twist creates waves since it makes the effect yarns longer than the actual length of the completed yarn.
Snarl Yarn:
- Like the loop yarn, the snarl yarn is based around a twisted core.
- In this type of fancy yarn, snarls or twists are observed projecting from the core. It is made by same method like loop yarn, but effect used is lively with high twist with greater degree of overfeed.
- The frequency and size of snarls is controlled by maintaining sinning tension and by the level of twist in the effect yarn.
Loop Yarn:
- A loop yarn consists of core with an effect yarn wrapped around it and it and overfed so as to produce circular projections on its surface.
- As per a general rule, four yarns are involved of which two form the core,
- Mohair fibers makes particularly suitable yarns and it is therefore, often used for this purpose.
- The effect yarn or fiber is not completely entrapped by the ground threads and thus a binder is needed.
Spiral Yarn:
- A spiral yarn is also referred as corkscrew yarn is a piled yarn which has the spiraling of ne component around other. It can be formed with several methods.
- If equal lengths of two yarns, one coarser than the other are folded together with a twist that opposes the thick yarn twist, the thicker yarn will appear to spiral around the thinner yarn.
- One or other of the two yarn component may be delivered at the grater rate. The shorter length forms the base and the longer forms its companion follows a spiral around it.
